Drawing As An Act Of Resistance

I am proposing an installation of my previously produced work during the Utopia School residency at Christiania Copenhagen in 2016. The documentation of two weeks of performative action, You Need To Draw to Understand the
Depth in a form of collage of 18 drawings and texts. It will be a projection on a wall and a zine (comprises of text and documentation of works from same series).

This is an ongoing project which is an experiment of act of drawing as a political action and act of resistance. It is an attempt to engage with spaces which are problematic to enter and stay in for certain socially-marginalized groups. These actions of drawing are an attempt to understand the space-time- body relationship, to make invisible visible, about forgetting and remembering, breaking the silences in different ways and becoming an which is important. Sometimes, it is meditative and serves the purpose of healing and sometimes its repetitiveness can be provocative and can make both parties, the performer and the audience, uncomfortable. In other words, this process is
investigating the politics of places in terms of: Place, Power, Identity and the Other (Urlrich Best and Anke Struver) investigated in Critical of Spatial Identities and Critical Spatial Identities. The other relevant work is Girada Kilomba's
video Desire : Act III.

I write as an Obligation,
To find myself
While I write
I am not the other,
But the self.....

With continuous processes of migration and emergence of new communities, the question of who can enter and stay, has become very significant in relation to physical borders and issues of legality and illegality. Then, there are these invisible borders which determine the access to the center which refers to authority and power in any given/ site-specific context. The Middle Session: The Elemental Middle at 30th Transmediale (Berlin, 2017) discusses the
politics of center and the margin, who has privilege to enter and to speak. It also emphasizes the need for acknowledgement of complex history of marginalization through processes of colonization, politics of suppression
and imposed silences and the need to decolonization of knowledge production to move forward. So, what is the right place to start again: the center, the margin or may be the Middle?
The site-specific drawing actions dealt with the sites including Buchenwald Concentration
Camp and Museum, Jakobsplan international student housing (with notorious status) in the city of Weimar, Utopia School (alternative free school and residential experiment) in Copenhagen, at climate camp organized by climate activists (a
utopian space) in Rhineland and recently at public restaurant in Karachi which usually are very male-dominated spaces.

What We Need Is Beautiful And Free

Inspired by The Diggers free bread and bakery, “What We Need is Beautiful and Free,” is a bread baking, discussion and free bakery installation. Each day, we will bake bread together to share and give away at our free bakery at Utopia School. While we make our daily bread, we will use this time to also discuss notions of free. What should be free? How can we work towards making things free? How are the concepts of free and freedom connected? By actively making bread together everyday can potentially inspire practices for sustaining a long term school.  

The Diggers were a radical community-action and political street theatre group based in San Francisco from 1966 –1968. The troupe combined street theatre, direct action and art happenings in their social agenda to create a Free City. Activities towards creating a Free City included distributing free food everyday at the Golden Gate Park, setting up free stores and free bakeries where they would bake bread in coffee cans.

During this class, we will discuss models used for preserving affordability in housing, including community land trusts and rent regulation, to commerical and industral spaces in cities.

We will break up into small groups, to read and discuss two approaches: regulating rents and controlling land. I will post the readings here closer to the dates (if you have suggestions, please post them in the comments).

We will then have a facilitated discussion about how to acheive these models in NYC.

Workshop on Gentrification, Colonialism, and Reparations

A one hour presentation with video from the African People's Socialist Party, 30 minute Q&A and facilitated discussion.

GENTRIFICATION IS COLONIALISM GENTRIFICATION IS GENOCIDE

Participants will study the concrete events and history of colonialism and gentrification in America and New York from the perspective of the black poor and working class.   We will also look at the projects of APEDF and Black Star Industries which are fighting back and concretely reversing gentrification by seizing community control and community organization in the black community.  This process is know as creating dual or contending power, we will define what that means and how progessive European and north american "white" people are called on to participate in genuine solidarity with the colonized.

“From non-complicity to transformative action: how self determination and accountability serve to address political urgency and systemic forms of injustice.”

This class is an invitation to collectively reflect on the principles of Critical Pedagogy (a form of education that challenges dominant structures in the aim of transforming society), and to devise together group mechanisms that can allow us to address the systemic practices that continue to perpetuate inaccessibility and injustice in shared spaces of education and culture.

Some of the issues we can discuss and actively work upon:

- The implementation of collective policies, like community agreements and safer spaces policies

- The development of ‘sensitivity training’ in group projects or institutions that are open to a diverse public

- How to facilitate an ongoing conversation on privilege and dominant identities

- The creation of multiple forms of feedback, accountability and participation mechanisms; so as to constantly de-centralize power and give agency to all participants to affect organizational structures, group objetives and practical procedures.

- How to shift from a culture of moral non-complicity (“This project is not racist”) to the ethics of engagement in transformation (“This project is actively involved in resisting and presenting an alternative to the dominant systems of oppression”).

All participants are invited to share readings and examples from personal experience, facilitate the discussion of certain topics and shape the overall objetives of the class.

Join us for a panel discussion with three artists working in varying mediums to discuss personal experiences in procuring funding and finding space for  your art practice. We'll sharing tips, tricks and strategies for your development as an artist, as well as grant research, writing, porfolios, and converting your talents into marketable skills. You are welcome to bring your artists statement, bio or CV, and together we will discuss what makes a successful application and how to best present yourself in order to successfully participate in the opportunities you are interested in. A Guide to the Utopian Infrastructure of Albany's Mansion Neighborhood

This lecture will present a Utopian Asset Map of the Mansion Neighborhood in Albany, New York.

Cultural Asset Mapping "provides an inventory of key cultural resources that can be utilized in a development effort." [Artscape, 2011] "Cultural asset mapping (CAM) is used to understand and interpret the complex interrelationships of cultural elements for use in strategic planning and economic development and is scaleable for use in smaller municipalities." [Voight, 2011] This field of practice developed step-by-step with the discipline of Creative Placemaking.

Cultural Asset Maps are generally produced for an audience of planners and economic development authorities. This Utopian Asset Map is produced for an audience of radicals seeking utopia, highlighting the existing utopian infrastructure of one neighborhood shattered by an extreme urban renewal project from 1962-1976 and rebuilt by an intentional community dedicated to building a school that prioritized the freedom and autonomy of children.

The Utopian Infrastructure of Mansion Neighborhood is rooted in that school--the Albany Free School--and the city block that constituted the Free School Community from the mid-1980s until the early 2000s. While the intentional community is no more, the School and its influence remain. A group of institutions spawned by members of the Free School Community and young activists who came to live in the neighborhood still hammer out radical urban futures.

Infrastructure generally refers to "the fundamental facilities and systems serving a country, city, or other area, including the services and facilities necessary for its economy to function. It typically characterises technical structures such as roads, bridges, tunnels, water supply, sewers, electrical grids, telecommunications and so forth, and can be defined as 'the physical components of interrelated systems providing commodities and services essential to enable, sustain, or enhance societal living conditions.' [Wikipedia] The Utopian Infrastrucure of Mansion Neighborhood was built to provide for the reproduction of the School and to maximize human freedom. Like any infrastructure, whether a road or water main, it requires maintenance, and this guide will include a condition report on each asset.

Founded in 1969 by Mary Leue, the Albany Free School is the longest-running inner-city independent alternative school in the United States. The Free School provides unique alternatives to traditional models of education, offering families a radically child-centered and self-directed approach to learning. The school operated in a off-the-grid/under-the-radar mode until the early 21st century, maintaining obscurity from the state to preserve autonomy. Multiple crises befell the school in the early 21st century, most importantly, a cultural dispute around racial diversity and white privilege which grew into a generational divide that effectively shattered the intentional community that supported the mission of the School. Abandoning obscurity for transparency led to new fiscal burdens, which have compounded the costs of deferred maintenance on the school building and Community buildings.

Additional Utopian Infrastructure includes

  • plentiful community gardens

  • an urban ecology center -- the Radix Ecological Sustainability Center founded by Scott Kellogg and Stacy Pettigrew on the maxim that “it is possible to meet human needs while simultaneously restoring ecosystems.” The Radix Center teaches practical skills that can be applied to create environmental and economic sustainability. Emphasis is placed on issues of food security, health, and the remediation of contaminated soils. The urban environmental educational center demonstrates environmental technologies and sustainable micro industries in today’s cities.

  • an arts center with a license to operate an FM station -- Historic St. Anthony’s Church / Grand Street Community Arts (GSCA), which operates an FM station at 107.3 FM.

  • a birthing center -- the Family Life Center (FLC) is one of the oldest independent childbirth support centers in New York.

  • a teen film-video academy -- YouthFX -  a hands-on program designed to empower young people ages 10-24 by teaching them the technical and creative aspects of digital film making and media production.

  • a grassroots political action committee - AVillage founded in 2009 by Willie Whyte, dedicated to community development in Albany's South End

as well as city-wide community initiatives for racial and economic justice, health, transporation, and homeownership.
The presentation will primarily consist of maps and photographs.

Community Forge: How to buy a 45000 sqft elementary school

The population of WIlkinsburg, PA has been shrinking since the 1940 census.  Because of this, many old, giant, beautiful pieces of public infrastructure are being turned sadly into storage units sat on by developers until gentrification turns them into luxury condos.  Me and a ragtag team of graduate student friends bought and renovated an enormous elementary school and are turning it into a vibrant community center/shared space for local non-profits and artist communities, with an end-game of cooperativizing the entire building.  Come hear stories of financing, acquiring state property, learning with and from the community, and renovating a 100 year old space.

Mapping as Memorial: Honoring Grief, Celebrating Lineage

In the workshop, we will use poetry & art/radical mapping to explore how we bridge connections between each other, mourn & memorialize in a world that refuses to acknowledge many of us, our power, and instead works to actively displace us. With attention to sites of grief, protest, art, and love, we will engage in discussion, writing, and a collective mapping project that tracks physical and emotional sites that traditional maps leave out. The exercise reimagines mapping as a revolutionary tool for remembrance and celebration of our lost spaces, our movements, our kin, and our heroes. How do we mourn and memorialize in a world that doesn’t acknowledge us, a world that rapidly pushes us out of our homes and communities? How do we connect through our grief, our pride, our love? It allows us to be the makers and educators of our own histories. It situates participants as both expert and student, creating a space where we both share our own and take in each others’ truths, knowledge(s), lineages, and relationships to place.

 

The entirety of the workshop is based on mapping as an interactive and radical practice, one that communities can use to archive political & artistic movements, personal and collective history, etc. The power to map isn’t often given to the marginal, or traditionally thought of as an artistic or radical endeavor. However, diy cartography is a means for archiving history, bringing communities together, and speaking our truths. It is a tangible way to honor and bring our lives into form through visual, textual, and emotional means. The ethic and intention of this project is to memorialize and archive local artistic and political communities in real time, as we experience them happening, as a route to healthy collaboration outside of institutions, the academy, and within a rapidly gentrifying city. This activity gives power back to self and community in the exercise of marking places, events, and people of importance.

Bike maintentance 101

Hello Everyone! My name is Freddie. I'm Enthusiastic to give this class about bike maintenance because my Utopia would be to live in a world or a place where bicycles would be the preferred choice of transportation. the goal of this class is individual empowerment through the freedom of cycling. My intent includes encouraging environmentalism through cycling and keeping your bike well tuned to enjoy life more. I look forward to see my friends; making new friends; and increasing the cyclist community. This class will include being informed about local cyclist resources and communities; questions answered about cycling essentials such as how to choose a bike that will be the right fit for the environment that you will be cycling in. We will discuss bike multi-tools and why every cyclist should own a few bike tools. Owning a multi bike tool will lower your cycling expenses so this class will be a intensive class on how to use a multi-tool and other tools and will help in determining what may be causing your bicycle not to be at peak performance. Please bring your bike ( and a multi-tool ) for this hands-on tutorial class.

The True History of NYC: An Anti-colonial, Anti-imperialist, Anti-capitalist walking tour of the big apple.

Tourists, newcomers and long-time residents alike are drawn to the unparalleled wealth and opportunity on display in New York City.  The glittering skyscrapers of the financial district and fancy shops of fifth avenue beckon from the heights of capitalist excess.  But why amidst all this wealth and power are black neighborhoods suffering under brutal police containment, and unlivable conditions?

 

As we know, New York City, like the state of New York and the country of the United States, was built from the kidnapping and trade of enslaved African people and the theft of land from the indigenous people.   This process, known as ‘colonialism,’ has continued uninterrupted for centuries and forms the pedestal upon which the wealth of the big apple is built, and underneath which its black working class community struggles for survival and self-determination.

 

The Uhuru Solidarity Movement will take guests on a  revolutionary, and unconventional tour of New York City that exposes the violent colonial foundations of its modern economic and cultural power: from the the arrival of Dutch kidnappers, the growth of the British trade in enslaved Africans, and the mass graves of African people in lower manhattan, to the colonial legal policies that emerged during and after abolition, central booking, corrections center, and other aspects of police containment, and finally examining the removal of African communities through the development of the boroughs and the rapid gentrification of Manhattan, Harlem, Brooklyn, and Queens within this ongoing process of destabilizing and dividing the poor and oppressed Black working class.  

 

This tour centers and uplifts the ongoing resistance of black communities both in New York and around the world, which has brought freedom and progress for sectors of white society too.  Finally we will look at reparations, the defining opportunity for white people to stand in genuine solidarity with the black community’s struggle for power and an end to this violent parasitic social, economic, and political system.  

 

When we talk about “utopia” we often speak in abstraction, but what is the concrete world that the poor and oppressed black working class is fighting for?

How do we get there?

What will the future look like without oppressor and oppressed?  

What will Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan look like?

What will be your relationship to land, life, community, and humanity?

Uhuru means freedom in the African language of Swahili.  The Uhuru Solidarity Movement, an organization formed by the 45-year-old African People’s Socialist Party, exists for white people to work in our own communities to rectify the relationship between the oppression of the black working class and white prosperity.

What We Need Is Beautiful And Free

“Made with Love ... the only stipulation is that you always give it away.”  — The Diggers, Free Bread

Inspired by The Diggers free bread and bakery, “What We Need is Beautiful and Free,” is a bread baking, discussion and free bakery installation. Each day, we will bake bread together to share and give away at our free bakery at Utopia School. While we make our daily bread, we will use this time to also discuss notions of free. What should be free? How can we work towards making things free? How are the concepts of free and freedom connected? By actively making bread together everyday can potentially inspire practices for sustaining a long term school.  

The Diggers were a radical community-action and political street theatre group based in San Francisco from 1966 –1968. The troupe combined street theatre, direct action and art happenings in their social agenda to create a Free City. Activities towards creating a Free City included distributing free food everyday at the Golden Gate Park, setting up free stores and free bakeries where they would bake bread in coffee cans.

Liberating Art and Artists From the Ultra-Wealthy

Arts institutions are currently situating themselves at the vanguard of the revolution by hosting shows that explore colonialism, queerness & institutionalized racism.

These shows are, ironically, almost exclusively sponsored by white billionaires who have made their $$$ by exploiting people and planet.

In this workshop, we will discuss tactics to expose and dismantle these systems. We will develop tools that empower artists to make demands of these institutions and their funders. We will imagine a world in which art isn't a luxury and arts institutions aren't a proxy for progress.

Atelier Populaire and the Basics of Screenprinting

I'm interested in teaching a screenprinting workshop in Flux's printshop.

One part of the workshop would be a brief introduction to the Atelier Populaire (a group of students known for making anti-consumerist posters during the strikes in France, May of 1968)

The Atelier Populaire used screenprinted posters as a method to create direct images/messages to distribute cheaply and easily. It was important to the group that the messages were both visually effective and economical, both in the time spent making them and the resources used to create them. They were not to be sold or used as decoration.

The second part of the workshop would be the basics of screenprinting. I will show a method that doesn't involve photo-emulsion or specialized equipment, so people can more easily do the process at home, if it interests them. We can work with an image that can be printed on t-shirts (from goodwill or donated) participants can take with them. Taking the idea of the political poster but making it wearable, carrying the message with you throughout the day.

Direct Democracy, Blockchain: Problems and Potentials

Lots of people are talking about Bitcoin these days.  Mostly it seems pretty terrible, but is there hope for the underlying technology "blockchain" to be used in the development of utopian projects?  Can we develop systems of exchange and participation that are more equitable using these software tools or is it all smoke, mirrors and pyramid schemes.  Though I am not an expert by any means, I will share my research on these technologies, as well as their social and environmental impact.  With a high level understanding of the functions of blockchain and cryptocurrency the group will then discuss hypothetical and actual projects that use it.

This is an ongoing project which is an experiment of act of drawing as a political action and act of resistance. It is an attempt to engage with spaces which are problematic to enter and stay in for certain socially-marginalized groups. These actions of drawing are an attempt to understand the space-time- body relationship, to make invisible visible, about forgetting and remembering, breaking the silences in different ways and becoming an which is important. Sometimes, it is meditative and serves the purpose of healing and sometimes its repetitiveness can be provocative and can make both parties, the performer and the audience, uncomfortable. In other words, this process is
investigating the politics of places in terms of: Place, Power, Identity and the Other (Urlrich Best and Anke Struver) investigated in Critical of Spatial Identities and Critical Spatial Identities. The other relevant work is Girada Kilomba's
video Desire : Act III.

With continuous processes of migration and emergence of new communities, the question of who can enter and stay, has become very significant in relation to physical borders and issues of legality and illegality. Then, there are these invisible borders which determine the access to the center which refers to authority and power in any given/ site-specific context. The Middle Session: The Elemental Middle at 30th Transmediale (Berlin, 2017) discusses the
politics of center and the margin, who has privilege to enter and to speak. It also emphasizes the need for acknowledgement of complex history of marginalization through processes of colonization, politics of suppression
and imposed silences and the need to decolonization of knowledge production to move forward. So, what is the right place to start again: the center, the margin or may be the Middle?
The site-specific drawing actions dealt with the sites including Buchenwald Concentration
Camp and Museum, Jakobsplan international student housing (with notorious status) in the city of Weimar, Utopia School (alternative free school and residential experiment) in Copenhagen, at climate camp organized by climate activists (a
utopian space) in Rhineland and recently at public restaurant in Karachi which usually are very male-dominated spaces.
